CHARLES HUSTON MCMURTREY

                   
Charles Huston McMurtrey, age 87, of Summer Shade passed away Monday, September 23rd at TJ Samson Community Hospital.

He was the son of the late Herman L and  Hazel Grider McMurtrey.

Charles was owner and operator of McMurtrey Funeral Home,which was started by his father, Herman in 1929. He was also owner/operator of McMurtrey Planing Mill which manufactured truck bodies for many years. Charles also participated in many civic organizations. He was a charter member of the Summer Shade Lions Club: served on the Metcalfe County School Board from 1960 - 1967: and a member of the Monroe County Home Health Board for several years. Charles was a weather observer for the National Weather Service for over 50 years. He also served in the United States Navy as an Aviation Cadet.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Arlene Morgan McMurtrey; three sons, Tom McMurtrey (Freda) of Summer Shade, David McMurtrey (Phyllis) of Maysville, Kentucky, Gary McMurtrey (Sharon) of Summer Shade; three daughters, Jan Page (David) of Bowling Green, Laurie Butler (Jimmy) of Edmonton and Shana McMurtrey of Summer Shade: nine grandchildren, Brian and Jason McMurtrey of Summer Shade, Korey McMurtrey (Allison) of Louisville, Ashley Miller (Tom) of Cold Spring, Sarah Hoover (Scott) of Louisville, Hannah Page of Bowling Green, Russ, Emily and Ty McMurtrey of Summer Shade; three great grandchildren Emma, Micah Jacob and Jude McMurtrey and his beloved cat, Millie.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Horace Florian (Buddy) McMurtrey.

Visitation will be Wednesday, September 25 beginning at noon and continuing Thursday. Funeral services will be held Friday, September 27 at 10:00 a.m. at McMurtrey Funeral Home with Bro. Gary Richardson officiating. Burial will be in the Summer Shade Cemetery.

Memorials are suggested to the Summer Shade Fire Department or the charity of your choice.
